How should carp be prevented from entering the Great Lakes at Chicago?

Vote

The artificial connection between the Mississippi River and Great Lakes watersheds at Chicago is a highway for spreading invasive species between the regions. An electric barrier is meant to discourage invaders such as the voracious Asian carp which are knocking on the Great Lakes’ door. Is it enough? I attended a Great Lakes public hearing this week that really wasn’t. The event at Michigan State University was one of the EPA-sponsored meetings held to solicit feedback for the Obama Administration’s proposed $475 million investment in environmental restoration. And while the meeting was open to the public, not much of the public was represented. Instead, this was mostly a Great Lakes love-in.

Welcome to the Great Lakes Echo

Here at Michigan State University’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism we believe that a university should do more than teach good journalism. While mainstream journalism jobs dwindle and the profession comes to grips with technological revolution, we believe we have an obligation to nurture environmental journalism while serving the public. Teaching is a vitally important university role. So are creation, innovation, research and service. Part of what you’ll see on this site is our attempt to concentrate the environmental reporting efforts within the Great Lakes basin.
