Ice floes travel past the Chicago Sun-Times building on the Chicago River, about a mile west of the river’s mouth at Lake Michigan.
In the summer this part of the river carries heavy tourist boat, pleasure craft and barge traffic.
The photo was taken at 10 a.m. Jan. 17. As the day warmed to 40 degrees farhenheit, the ice floes were gone by mid-afternoon.
The image was taken from the fifth floor of the building below, which is constructed to mirror the bend of the river.
