Photo Friday: Chicago’s Loop from space

This image of Chicago along the shores of Lake Michigan was taken recently by astronauts on the International Space Station. Image: NASA

Chicago’s center lies near the mouth of the Chicago River. The city’s downtown “loop” is clearly identified as the darker region in this image taken from the International Space Station. That’s because the high rise buildings cast much deeper shadows than those that are less tall. You can read more about this image at NASA’s Earth Observatory.
