Members of three organizations that work to preserve Michigan’s Grand River recently took home a second place in the Capital City Dragon Boat race.

Friends of the Looking Glass River, the Friends of the Maple River and the Middle Grand River Organization of Watersheds rallied together to form the Mighty Tridents of the Middle Grand. The 20-person team, including a drummer and a flag catcher, shares a passion for preserving the watershed of the Grand River.

Loretta Crum, co-captain of the Mighty Tridents and vice president of the Middle Grand River Organization of Watersheds, said that the organizations combined for the race to deliver their message:

“What happens in the smaller rivers affects the bigger rivers and ultimately affects the Great Lakes,” Crum said. “Dragon boat racing tests people’s abilities to work together as a team, and that is a parallel to protecting our watershed. We have to work together.”

The event benefited the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing. Results can be found here.
