Each week, Great Lakes Echo features a photo story about a different Area of Concern designated by the U.S. or Canadian governments in the Great Lakes basin. Guess where the area is located, based on the description of the site.

This week’s expert is Jill Jedlicka, the remedial action plan coordinator for this Area of Concern.

Summary of the area:

  • Listed as an Area of Concern in 1987 because of poor water quality issues caused by 100 years of industrial pollution in the region.
  • It once was one of the largest ports in the world. It also had one of the largest economies.
  • Winds through an urban community.
  • Seven out of the nine of the site’s Beneficial Use Impairments, or problems that need to be fixed before delisting, are related to contaminated sediment.

Last week’s answer: Port Hope, Ontario.
