Suburban Detroit greens up with federal grants

Oakland and Macomb counties are getting a little greener with federal money for energy-based projects under the Obama administration’s stimulus program.

Sixty-one communities received grants from the Department of Energy, most in the southeast part of the state. Among them are projects to manufacture wind turbines, generate electricity from wastewater sludge and install solar shingles.

Why I do what I do

Chalk it up to Robert Redford, cancer clusters, love of writing, questioning authority.

And then there is an eclectic fascination with environmental crimes, Richard Nixon, great beauty, a living laboratory and resiliency.

And of course there are the passionate crusaders.

And heaven’s baseball team.

Research site set for Lake Superior

The fight against climate change, invasive species and contaminated water in the Great Lakes has come to Wisconsin’s Lake Superior shoreline in Wisconsin. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has designated 17,000 acres there for research, education, outreach and stewardship.
