A great thing about journalistic efforts like Echo is that readers contribute to the reports. They aren’t shy about pointing out omissions. They provide valuable context and new story ideas. They are quick to cry foul if they think something isn’t right. Collectively they know more about the Great Lakes environment than any single journalist possibly could.
And they can be funny.
Perhaps our favorite reader comment of 2009 is on a column by Andy McGlashen debating the ethics of hunting. Can a kind man kill? was inspired in part by Andy’s recent marriage to a woman who apparently is less than enamored with the sport. This column generated the most reader comments of any single post appearing on Echo in 2009. The best came from a reader identified as Mary:
To my dear son-in-law, Andy, Honey, I wasn’t aware that you are such a bloodthirsty little carnivore. I love you, anyway. I think that for the sake of my future grandchildren, you probably should not hunt because my daughter might possibly kill you.
The best reader comments inform AND prompt a chuckle. We’ll bring you a few more of our favorites of 2009 through this week.
