Michigan proposes local control of backyard livestock

An important debate over urban farming in Michigan continues today in Lansing. Officials from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and others will discuss proposed rule changes governing farm animals in developed, residential areas.

It spotlights the efforts of two urban farmers fighting to develop a food community in Flint. The Michigan State University production includes video recorded by the farmers themselves as they navigate the hurdles that come with pioneering work.

Producers of an award-winning video about Flint, karate and urban agriculture are working on an hour-long version.
It will include additional footage – some shot by urban farmers themselves – to create an organically grown storyline about growing food in the city.
