Preventing wildfires by setting them

Prescribed burns do more than prevent wildfires. The Michigan DNR says they also “help regenerate forests, control invasive species, create wildlife habitat and promote healthy forests.”

A February snowshoeing trek to lower Hungarian Falls, near the town of Hubbell in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, revealed the 50-foot cascade to be largely encased in ice. U.P. sulfide proposal sparks criticism

The state has already approved one controversial mine in the Upper Peninsula, and now other companies are poised to start a similar lengthy permit application process.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment approved a permit for the Kennecott Minerals Co. Eagle project in the Yellow Dog Plains earlier this year.
