Field trip: everyone into the (vernal) pool

More

In this episode of Echos, Marie Orttenburger returns to a vernal pool in spring after learning about them last winter. This time, she’s accompanied by Kelli Polley’s seventh grade science class from Harbor Springs Middle School.

The students collected data as part of the Vernal Pool Patrol Project, a combination of efforts from the Michigan Natural Features Inventory, the Great Lakes Fishery Trust and several conservancies around Michigan.

Students went into the trip just happy to get outside. But they walked away from it with an understanding of a new ecosystem and its unique inhabitants–who’ve been in their backyard all this time.
