Semi-final action begins this week in Echo’s Eco Cup with the Minnesota Wild facing the Montreal Canadians.

Below is a review of the two hockey teams’ sustainability efforts. Weigh in on the comments or vote for the team you believe most worthy. Results reported Wednesday.

Minnesota Wild:

Minnesota offset electricity used during home games for the entire 2011-2012 season with wind-power purchases. The team has also installed bike racks to allow staff and fans to bike to the arena. Staff receive bus vouchers and access to charging stations for electric cars. Within three years the Wild have reduced emissions of carbon compounds, their carbon footprint, by 7,100 metric tons! Composting initiatives are under way, and team officials hope to reduce trash by more than 50 percent and increase recycling by more than 50 percent. The arena is certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, better know an as LEED.

Montreal Canadians:

The Canadians’ robust recycling and composting program has diverted more than 85 percent of the arena’s waste. They provide preferred parking for hybrid cars and have a pilot project to switch to light emitting diodes, or LED lights, that consume 60 percent less electricity. Such measures have contributed to certification by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, better known as LEED, program.
