The Montreal Canadians and Ottawa Senators also met in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. It took Montreal six games then to prevail.
The Canadians had an easier time with Ottawa in their Eco Cup matchup, and trounced the Senators in the poll. That means that the Montreal Canadians face the Minnesota Wild in the second round of the Eco Cup.
But first we have the last Eco Cup match of the first round scheduled next Wednesday when the Toronto Maple Leafs faceoff against the Buffalo Sabers. Weigh in on this meeting with comments, or vote in the poll below.
Here’s how that match is shaping up:
Buffalo Sabers
The Sabers may have lost out on Connor McDavid but their hopes for the Eco-Cup remain alive because of the Blue and Gold Make Green Initiative. It focuses on preserving the environment and teaching the community how to be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. To do this, the Sabers send out information and tips on how to save on resources like water and electricity.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs are rebuilding their roster this summer, but their sustainability efforts won’t have to go through a similar process. The Leafs are home to one of the more unique ways to become sustainable. Their arena is cooled by a “deep-lake water cooling” system that uses cold water from Lake Ontario. Additionally it uses a system similar to an anaerobic digester that turns food waste into water. The system has helped the Maple Leafs reduce their waste by more than 74 percent since 2007. They also have a high tech cleaning system that turns tap water into an extremely effective cleaning solution, that doesn’t require as many harsh chemicals. In three years the Leafs also managed to reduce their emissions of carbon compounds, their carbon footprint, by 34 percent and waste by 48 percent.
