More

Well, the Penguins squeezed out a victory in their first round battle with the Red Wings in the Echo Eco Cup challenge.

Now it’s on to the Senators vs the Canadians in a divisional rivalry. Read the highlights of their sustainability efforts, weigh in on the comments below and cast a vote for which team should win this match. We’ll declare a winner on Friday and launch the next match.

Ottawa Senators

The Senators have a young team with great prospects like Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman. Sustainability efforts are also at a young stage. Their arena underwent a full energy audit in 2012 that revealed spots for improvement. In 2014, the Senators switched to light emitting diodes, or LED lights, the Ottawa community news reported.

Montreal Canadians

The Montreal Canadians were one of the best teams in the National Hockey League this year, and must be considered similarly in Eco Cup competition. The Canadians’ robust recycling and composting program has diverted more than 85 percent of the arena’s waste. They provide preferred parking for hybrid cars and have a pilot project to switch to light emitting diodes, or LED lights, that consume 60 percent less electricity. Such measures have contributed to certification by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, better known as LEED, program.
