When last week’s snowstorm and cold spell made its way through the Great Lakes, nearly 90 percent of Lake Erie froze over, according to the NASA Earth Observatory. The colorized picture above shows ice (pale blue) and snow (blue-green) formed on top of the lake.

A report by Jeff Masters, director of meteorology at Wunderground.com, showed that these high levels of ice coverage had not been seen on the Great Lakes since January 1994.

  1. Joe, If the ice is floating how can it “scrub the bottom” 20,40,or60 feet below itself??? You lack the truth.

  2. What’s wrong with his picture? That’s not the Lake Erie thhat nature knows and has formed over 12,000 years. It’s the new 50 year old very sickly Lake Erie. It suffers from conveyor disruption. Constipation in lay terms. If you google “Joe Barrett/Ice Boom” you can read all the ill effects of the N.Y.P.A. ice boom. The real price of stopping the ice as I like to say. Hydro power in general is clean but when you consider that to do it here year round, you have to interfear with the entire Lower Great Lakes ecosystem it’s not such a good deal. All that ice was meant to move along in a floating glacier like fashion and scrub the bottom, move sediment, remove detritus, prepare spawning beds and feed Ontario. Now? nothing! just a big melt in place and Ohio gets the big green monster. Join me and help spread the word about “Ice boom theory” Thanks, Joe Barrett
