Each week, Great Lakes Echo features a photo story about a different Area of Concern designated by the U.S. or Canadian governments in the Great Lakes basin. Guess where the area is located, based on the description of the site.

This week’s expert is Steve Hamilton, president of the Watershed Council for this river.

Summary of the area:

  • The river was listed as an AOC because of historical contamination from PCBs, which came primarily from the paper industry.
  • PCB pollution in the area has caused fish consumption advisories, beach closures, dredging restrictions, degradation of wildlife populations, animal deformities and habitat loss.
  • The biggest challenge to delisting involves contaminated sediments trapped behind old, unused dams.
