Hi Brian, Yep lots of things “should be” Don’t mean they is. My fish farmer uses chicken manure, meat sraps and alfalfa, didn’t ask him if he asked about hormones he just said chicken manure was free.

The reality is that the states that have a large economic interest in CAFOs really don’t give a damn where the shit goes as long as the money keeps rolling in. Chesapeake Bay is slowly dying from point source and non-point source CAFO pollution. There are ever growing areas of the Bay that have little or no oxygen, thus no life. Totally inadequate manure holding ponds have leaked or completely washed out into creeks and streams leading to the Bay. Manure spread on fields regularly washes, with every rain, into ditches, then creeks, then streams, then rivers into the bay. The environmental agencies of these states have been told to ignore this source of pollution, much as they ignore coal mining pollution in Appalachia. Money rules.

Hi Tom, Manure used for zooplankton is — or should be — organic. The runoff from CAFOs carries manure from animals that have been fed synthetic hormones, most commonly trenbolone. This is a nascent research field, but the hypothesis is that it’s the synthetic hormones that may spur skewed sex ratios in fish.

Mutant minnows, probably gonna need a special permit to fish with them. I get it about the pollution, but they use manure to generate the zooplankton to raise minnows and fish. Catch 22?
