Banning plastic bags is a start, but the reality is we live in a society loaded with plastic, and the plastic molecules are showing up in human blood, including cord blood of newborn babies. Micro-molecules of plastic are not just from grocery bags, often it's from polyester and man-made technical fabrics including nylon, lycra & specialty fabrics found in athletic apparel. Evertime we wash clothing, micro-particles get washed into the water supply. Thanks for bringing this to light, hopefully we can get the word out and do something to improve the situation.I live near the Great Lakes and know it could be a great resource if we take care of it.

Here are some other ideas for choosing plastic-free options in consumer products: http://purehomeandbody.com/personal-body-care/12-clever-ways-to-replace-plastic/

Good article! I want to clarify that we found less plastic by weight, but much more by count, than what we find in the middle of the gyres. The centers of the subtropical gyres are stable high pressure systems where the wind and waves slow down. Plastic pollution accumulates there. In the Great Lakes we expected to find newer plastics that were less photodegraded. We did find that. What's surprising is that we found very high counts of microplastics. One sample contained 1596 plastic particles. That's much higher than the amount found in any trawl I've done in any ocean.

We solve the plastic problem by going upstream. That's why we surveyed the Great Lakes. In the ocean, it's difficult to point to a company or country and assign responsibility. We can do this near the coast, in rivers or lakes. To solve the ocean plastics problem we must reduce the loss of plastic from land. What out there now will eventually wash ashore on the windward side of islands, photodegrade completely, or be carried to the bottom of the ocean in the bellies of dying fish. Let's focus our efforts on not adding more plastic to the sea.
