Are meat eaters killing the planet? It’s hard to say

(ON) The Globe and Mail - Last week, renowned climate expert Nicholas Stern declared that the world would have to give up meat to conquer global warming. “Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases,” he told the Times of London. “It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources.” So if you’re serious about personal responsibility, you should become a vegetarian.

Lord Stern’s dietary guidance coincides with a new report claiming meat is a far bigger problem than we thought it was. The paper, published by the respected Worldwatch Institute, says livestock generate more than half of all global greenhouse-gas emissions – more than the combined impact of industry and energy.
