Lt. Gov. John Cherry talks turkey about outdoor issues

(MI) Detroit Free Press - As he followed Cody through the field, Lt. Gov. John Cherry talked about issues that would interest hunters and anglers if he manages to follow Jennifer Granholm into the governor’s office next year.

On the decision to reunite the Departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality with a director appointed by the governor, Cherry said: “The director of (a combined) department would have to have one foot in the conservation side and one foot in the environmental side. The real issue is that people who hunt and fish are a shrinking minority, and the head of the combined department has to reach out beyond that group. I don’t see governors investing a lot of political capital in departments where they don’t appoint the director.” More
