If the politicians are so worried about the amount of water leaving the Great Lakes, they need to concentrate on the problem left by the dredging of the Detroit River in the 1920's. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were supposed to place cement blocks in the bottom of the river to prevent errosion. When they originally did the dredging, the water was extremely shallow, so the depth was increased to around 30 feet to accomodate shipping traffic. It's now over 90 feet deep. Estimates of up to an additional inch of Great Lakes water are lost annually due to the errosion at the bottom of the river. Get the U.S. Corps of Engineers to honor their old contract and fix this problem, and we'll have water to spare.
